Hi! I'm Toadie...

You may be more familiar with my, rather famous Uncle, Mr Toad. He is a character from the English story books, 'Wind in the Willows' written by Kenneth Grahame. Set in the English country side along the banks of the river, Mr Toad and three friends, Badger, Ratty and Mole, share many adventures.

Mr Toad has a spontaneous nature and he loves to entertain friends and travellers in his large home, Toad Hall.

It is thought, by some, that I,Toadie of Toad Hall Backpackers, Napier, NZ, am a distant relative of Mr Toad. There is of course no firm proof, though the similarities are quite striking and has lead to several aunties gossiping over tea cups.

Some weight was given to the theory when Mr Toad himself bundled me into the nearest EasyJet and bid me farewell "To find oneself, as one must do".

I'm not sure where I was supposed to get off, so I stayed on till the plane went no further. A friendly attendant then advised I had arrived in Aotearoa-New Zealand and that I was sure to be happy here.

After exploring New Zealand from Cape to Bluff, and creating a little mayhem along the way, I decided it was time to find a home. A place where I could entertain friends and travellers, just as my Uncle did. It was around this time that, through a series of administrative errors, I  gained residency. I still find it a little difficult to call myself a kiwi. I'm a good looking Toad after all!

Napier is sunny, central, has wine and is a little bit posh. Just the kind of place that needed a Toadie!

On the edge of Napiers city area, I discovered a Spanish Mission style building with a wonderful history of surviving fires, sailors, rock ‘n’ roll and earthquakes. It was perfect.

The aunties raise an eyebrow or two every now and then as they hear stories of antics at Toad Hall Backpackers. But what's life without a few raised  eyebrows....
